A Reverts Guide to Islam

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Islam began as something strange and will revert to being strange as it began, so give glad tidings to the strangers.”

Short Surahs for you to memorize

For new muslims, praying in Arabic can be overwhelming as well as intimidating. One of the first surahs from the quran that I memorized when I reverted to islam, was Surah 112, Al-Ikhlas (Purity).

Al-Quran is divided into thirty equal divisions, which are called juz in Arabic. There are 114 chapters, of varying length. The longest chapter is Al-Baqarah consisting of 286 verses and the shortest chapter is Al Kawthar consisting of three verses only.

Below you will find a short recitation of surah Ikhlas as well as the Arabic transliteration which you can follow along with as well as the English Translation.

Surah Al-Ikhlas, 112 (Purity)

Bismillaah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem

Qul huwallaahu ahad

Allahus samad

Lam yalid wa lam yuulad

Wa lamyakun lahuuu kufuwan ahad

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Merciful.

Say: He is Allah, the One and Only;

Allah, the Eternal, Absolute;

He begetteth not, nor is He begotten;

And there is none like unto Him.

The video below lists Surahs Ikhlas, Nas and Falaq *chapters 112, 113 and 114 of the Quran* I have added the Arabic Transliteration as well as the English Translation for each. The best way to memorize it is to follow along and practice.

Surah 113 Al-Falaq (The Dawn)
Bismillaah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem

Qul a'uudhu birabbil falaq

Min sharri ma khalaq

Wa min sharri ghaasiqin idhaa waqab

Wa min sharrin naffaathaati fil 'uqad

Wa min sharri haasidin idhaa hasad

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Merciful.

Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the Dawn From the mischief of created
things;

From the mischief of Darkness as it overspreads;

From the mischief
of those who practice secret arts;

And from the mischief of the envious one
as he practices envy.

Surah 114
An-NĂ¡as (Mankind)

Bismillaah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem

Qul a'uudhi bi rabbin naas

Malikin naas

Ilaahin naas

Min sharril wawaasil khannas

Alladhee yuwaswisu fee suduurin naas

Minal Jinnati wa naas

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Merciful

Say: I seek refuge with the Lord and Cherisher of Mankind,

The King (or Ruler) of Mankind,

The god (or judge) of Mankind,-

From the mischief of the Whisperer (of Evil), who withdraws (after his whisper).

(The same) who whispers into the hearts of Mankind,-

Among Jinns and among men.
